in loving memory of
DOEL BRYANT RIVERA 08/14/2008 – 11/17/2014
At the age of 5, Bryant was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a form of blood cancer, a rapid growth of abnormal white cells that accumulate in the bone marrow and interfere with the production of normal blood cells.
Bryant was diagnosed July 7th, 2014, that was the day our lives changed forever. That’s the day I heard the words; “your child has cancer.” Right away Bryant was taken into surgery, had a broviac catheter inserted in his chest for easy access to all chemotherapy treatments and medications. For the next 104 days, Bryant was infused with toxic chemotherapy treatments. This treatment that has the word toxic written in big red letter across the dosage was suppose to kill the bad cells, but instead it killed the good cells and immune system. Thankfully we were able to celebrate his 6th birthday at home. After 4 months of ups and downs, at the age of 6yrs old, lil Bryant’s body had taken enough toxic treatments and his organs, one by one began to fail. Bryant spent the last 4 days of his life hooked up to a life support machine and gained his angel wings November 17th, 2014.
As a single mother I had to quit my job to care for Bryant 24/7. During those 4 months living in the hospital my family, friends and the community got together to raise funds for my household. That was the only way I was able to keep paying rent, bills, food and those extra expenses childhood cancer brings. The amount of love, prayers, emotional and financial support was huge. My goal is to do the same for other childhood cancer families in Jacksonville and the North Florida region. The Bryantstrong Foundation is committed to raise awareness on childhood cancer. Bringing the community together, to help bring smiles to local children admitted for cancer treatments in our local Children’s Hospital Oncology Floor.
